More than accommodating dignitaries,
the “Guest House” will hopefully stand the test of time.

Taking a stroll by the Lotus Pond of the Taipei Botanical Garden, one will come upon a building exuding history. As early as the era of Japanese rule,

a sumptuous two-story wooden building had already existed here. It was a “Guest House” built in 1916, from which the NMH originated.

The Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan at the time, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Japanese rule in Taiwan, hosted the Taiwan Industrial Exhibition and specially built the opulent Guest House by a pond in the Taipei Nursery (of plant seedlings) specifically for the purpose of entertaining, dining and accommodating dignitaries to the exhibition.

Farming? Fishery? Minerals?
Everything is covered in the “Commodity Exhibition Hall”

When the Taiwan Industrial Exhibition ended, this Guest House was handed over to the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan as the “Commodity Exhibition Hall,” which officially opened in 1917 and hosted many large-scale industry-and-commerce exhibition events over the years. In the Commodity Exhibition Hall one can see trade goods from all over Taiwan, South China and Southeast Asia. It was one of the most bustling exhibition venues in Taipei at the time.

Architects and technicians’ office

The original two-story space gradually became congested with an increasing demand for product displays. In 1938, the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan decided to relocate the Commodity Exhibition Hall to the Taipei Telephone Exchange Bureau. The two-story building itself was handed over to the Engineering Division in the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan, and became the office for Taiwan’s highest-ranking governmental organization in charge of civil engineering.
